Clothing for Your Chihuahua
If you’ve seen Chihuahuas out with their owners, you may have noticed that many Chihuahua owners actually dress their Chihuahuas. You may think that they just do this for fun, but that isn’t necessarily the case.
You see, Chihuahuas quickly lose body heat. During the winter time, if you take a Chihuahua outside, it is in his best interest to be dressed in a sweater, to help retain some of his body heat. Therefore, you need to purchase clothing for your Chihuahua.
Most clothing can easily be purchased at any store where pet supplies are sold. It is just a question of finding the right size, and in many cases, it is a situation where one size fits most, and the sizes are deemed as small, medium, or large – or the tag may indicate certain weights that the clothing will fit.
It is important that you start dressing your Chihuahua when he or she is very young. This way, they become accustomed to wearing clothing on their bodies, and never have any objection to it. In fact, during those cold months, when walks outside are still necessary, they will appreciate the extra warmth. If you keep your house cool during the summer, the dog may be rather cold, and the clothing will be handy at that point as well.
When the Chihuahua is still quite small, you may not be able to find clothing small enough to fit him. Most clothing for dogs is designed for dogs that are already fully grown. In the meantime, you can purchase a mitten and carry your Chihuahua in that, although you will have to take him out so that he can relieve himself. If you know how to knit or crochet, you may even be able to make some baby clothing for your tiny Chihuahua puppy.
During the warmer summer months, you may still want to dress your Chihuahua, just to keep him accustomed to this. Don’t choose clothing that is hot. T-shirts are suitable, but knit sweaters are not. Some people just tie a bandana around the dog’s neck during these months. Just be sure that it doesn’t drag the ground, or choke the dog.
Clothing that you choose for your Chihuahua should fit well. You don’t want any clothing that puts him in danger. Clothing could hang up on objects and the dog could choke himself trying to get loose. For this reason, many people only dress their dogs when they are supervising the dog. In other words, don’t leave your dog home alone wearing his clothing, unless you are sure that there is no danger of your Chihuahua catching the clothing on anything that he may get hung up on.
