Different Types of Chihuahuas
If you are told that there are different types of Chihuahuas, you may or may not believe it. The fact is that there are really only two types of Chihuahuas. Other than this, there are different colors of Chihuahuas, and of course, Chihuahuas, like other animals and people, come in different sizes. However, different sized Chihuahuas are not different breeds.
The first type of Chihuahua is the short haired Chihuahua. These dogs have short, sleek hair. This hair, despite being so short, does shed. Most people agree that this is the easiest type of Chihuahua to care for in terms of grooming, but grooming the other type of Chihuahua really isn’t very difficult.
The second type of Chihuahua is the long haired Chihuahua. His hair will grow to be just an inch or two in length, and appears to be a bit wavy. The long haired Chihuahua does not require hair cuts, as his hair will never grow to be overly long.
The only difference between grooming a short haired Chihuahua and a long haired Chihuahua is that long haired Chihuahuas will need more frequent brushing, and you should also comb them with a steel comb after brushing to remove any tangles or mats in their fur.
So, which type of Chihuahua is best? It really just depends on what you prefer. There is no difference between these two types of Chihuahuas in terms of health, temperament, personality, or habits…a Chihuahua is a Chihuahua, whether his hair is long or short.
Some people prefer the look of the long haired Chihuahua while others prefer the look of the short haired Chihuahua. Either way, under the fur, the features are still the same. The eyes, nose, muzzle, and ears are the same between the long haired Chihuahuas and the short haired Chihuahuas, so it comes down to preferring long or short hair for the owner.
Most dog shows judge the long haired Chihuahuas and short haired Chihuahuas separately, although some will judge them together, in one category. Either way, one type does not have any advantage over the other type of Chihuahua.
The equality between the two types even carries over to their health and body warmth. Chihuahuas are famous for shivering – often from excitement or nervousness, but sometimes because they are cold. Regardless of any myths you may hear, long haired Chihuahuas do not retain body heat any better than the short haired Chihuahuas. Again, there is no benefit of having one over the other. It’s just a matter of your personal preference for long or short hair when it comes to Chihuahuas.
