Entertaining Your Chihuahua

Like small children, Chihuahuas can become easily bored. These dogs have an abundance of energy, and if that energy is not being spent in a positive way, it will most definitely be spent in a negative way. Just as bored children will look for mischief to get into, so will a bored Chihuahua. For a happy, well behaved Chihuahua, entertainment is required.

First, make it a point to spend time with your Chihuahua each day. This is a time during the day where all of your attention is focused on the dog, and it should be the same time each day, so that the dog becomes accustomed to it. Again, it is vital that all of your attention is focused on the dog at this time – and that he knows this.

Take the time to play with your dog. Throw a ball for him, roll around on the floor with him, play chase, or play tug-o-war with him. Chihuahuas need to play in order to get rid of all of that energy that they have.

Take your Chihuahua for walks. Take different routes so that he can enjoy different sights, sounds, and smells. Try to walk at least thirty minutes a day with your Chihuahua. Not only is this great for the dogs health and attitude, it is also good for your health.

If your Chihuahua is an indoor dog, make sure that you take him somewhere where you are able to take him off of his leash and let him run and jump. This is essential to his well being, and an excellent way to expend some of his excess energy. Try to do this for at least thirty minutes each day if possible - if this isn’t possible, at least let him loose to run three times a week or so. Make sure that the area is safe for him, and that it is legal to have him off the leash in this area.

Have a variety of toys that your Chihuahua can play with, without your participation. Chew toys are ideal. Also have down time with your dog – where you peacefully sit and allow the dog to sit with you – calmly. Use this time to brush the dog or to simply pet him and talk to him.

If you do not have an abundance of time to spend with your Chihuahua, get a second Chihuahua. While Chihuahuas don’t typically get along with other animals, they do get along well with their own breed. This will give your Chihuahua a friend and companion when you are too busy to give him the time and attention that he needs. Just make sure that you are still giving these two precious Chihuahuas enough time and attention!
