Healthy Chihuahua Treats

We love our Chihuahuas, and because we love them so much, we want to give them treats. The excitement that shines in their eyes when they know that a treat is coming is so great that we often give them treats that they shouldn’t have, or too much of a treat that would otherwise be perfectly fine for them.

When it comes to treats, avoid any type of treat that is loaded with sugar. This is bad for all dogs. Most foods that are designed for people are bad for animals. When it comes to Chihuahuas, the exceptions to this rule are peanut butter and cheese, both of which are full of protein – and Chihuahuas need protein. Cheese and peanut butter are also both very fattening, and therefore you must give your Chihuahua these two treats sparingly.

Treats designed for dogs are okay as well. This includes Alpo Snacks and other dog biscuits can be given to your Chihuahua once or twice a day, but again, remember that too much of anything is never healthy, no matter how healthy that food is.

Note the difference between a treat and a snack. Treats should be reserved for special occasions. If they are given daily, for no good reason, they are no longer treats…they have become snacks. Snacks should be given at the same time each day, and you might want to check with your veterinarian concerning how much of the snack to give you dog each day, based on how much he eats at his three meals throughout the day and the particular dog’s weight and overall health.

Most dogs can chew on raw hide bones throughout the day, and this will not have an effect on their diet or weight. If anything, these types of ‘treats’ help to keep the dogs teeth and gums in good shape, while satisfying his or her need to chew on something. These types of ‘treats’ aren’t really treats at all, and many just consider these raw hide bones or pieces as either toys for the dog, or part of his regular nutrition.

Do not ever give your Chihuahua table scraps as a snack or treat. Food designed for people really isn’t healthy for them, and will quickly lead to obesity, which can shorten the Chihuahua’s life span considerably. Stick with regular dog food and snacks designed specifically for dogs instead.

Because Chihuahuas are finicky eaters – even when it comes to snacks and treats – you may have to experiment with different types of snacks and brands to find the ones that your Chihuahua will like. Try to buy the smallest sizes of these snacks and treats until you find the one that your Chihuahua likes the most.
