How Much Attention Does Your Chihuahua Need

Chihuahuas are loving and affectionate little dogs. While most dog breeds want lots of attention, Chihuahuas seem to require more time and attention than many other breeds. In fact, Chihuahuas can easily become like children to their owners.

But how much attention does your Chihuahua really need? The answer to that question has to be that your Chihuahua needs as much attention as you can possibly give him. To his way of thinking, there is no such thing as too much attention.

Many people thoroughly spoil their Chihuahuas with an abundance of time and attention, and this is absolutely fine. The dog isn’t likely to rob any liquor stores when he grows up or riffle through your purse for your social security check. He will simply absorb all of that time and attention, and give you back all of the time and attention that you can stand and then some.

With that said, however, you must still use caution. If you have major changes in your life that don’t allow you to give your Chihuahua the time and attention from you that he is accustomed to, this will be something that the dog won’t understand, and he is likely to act out as a result.

The best thing that you can do for yourself and your Chihuahua is to establish the time that you spend together, make it a part of your daily routine, and stick with it. Dogs thrive on routines. Set aside time each day when your attention is fully on your Chihuahua.

At other times of the day, go about your normal activities, but allow the dog to follow you around the home, and if possible, take him with you when you go out. Just make sure that you don’t always take him. If he always gets to go, he won’t understand when there comes a time when he cannot go with you. There won’t be any way that you can explain it to him that he will understand or agree with at that point either.

Again, it is fine to dote on your Chihuahua and spoil him thoroughly, as long as there aren’t going to be any changes in your own life that would change this in the future. If there is that possibility, don’t spoil the Chihuahua too much, or you and him will both be sorry in the end.
