Safety Concerns for Chihuahuas
We work hard to make our environments safe for our children and for ourselves. We have to work equally hard to ensure safe environments for our pets. This is especially true when it comes to Chihuahuas, and is due in large part to their natural curiosity, their fearlessness, and of course their small size.
Take a look around your home, and think in terms of Chihuahua safety. Where are the dangers for your little dog? Are there small spaces where he could become lost or stuck? Are there products that he may ingest which could make him ill – or even cause his death?
Inside of your home, the biggest safety hazard for Chihuahuas is their own curiosity. They like to explore. They can easily pull heavy objects down on top of themselves causing injuries. They could get into high places, and then try to jump to the floor, again causing injury. Remove these potential dangers from your home.
Chihuahuas are highly intelligent. This means that if their curiosity gets the best of them, and they want to know what is inside a cabinet in your kitchen, they will find a way to open it. This may subject them to products or chemicals that can harm them. Consider putting child safety locks on your cabinets.
Outdoors, the greatest danger is other animals. You see, Chihuahuas really know no fear. They will quickly go after other animals with teeth barred, and because other animals are usually bigger than they are, this often results in injury or death if you are not there to keep your Chihuahua safe and under control. This is why most Chihuahuas are indoor pets, and are never left outside alone.
Other outdoor dangers include products such as antifreeze and fertilizer. Both are toxic for your Chihuahua, and the only way to keep him away from these dangers is to constantly have your eyes on him when he is outdoors.
Indoors and outdoors, small spaces can be dangerous. You should block these small spaces off, to prevent the Chihuahua from climbing in and getting stuck. Keep toilet lids closed as well, because the dog could literally fall in while trying to get a drink of water and drown. It won’t matter if you keep fresh water down for him…most dogs cannot resist the toilet water.
While it may not be as hard to keep a Chihuahua safe as it is to keep a child safe, you must still apply the same seriousness to the task. Again, look at things from a Chihuahuas perspective, and try to determine what the dangers are for him, and either do away with those dangers, or block them off so that your beloved Chihuahua cannot come into contact with them.
