Selecting a Chihuahua Breeder

Once you’ve decided that you want a Chihuahua puppy, you will need to find a breeder – and not just any breeder will do. You want a responsible breeder that is known for raising healthy, happy puppies. There are many ways to locate responsible breeders.

Start with your veterinarian and humane society. They will often know of breeders in your area. It will be up to you to check out that breeder to ensure that they are a responsible breeder. Ask the breeder for references from past clients. You can also inquire about any memberships that they may hold as well, and check them out through the organizations that they belong to.

Of course, these organizations are also an excellent way to find a responsible breeder. Check to see if there are any local breeders clubs in your area, or in an area near you. These clubs will require their members to uphold certain standards to retain their membership.

If there are no local breeders clubs, check for state or national breeders clubs and locate a breeder this way. You can also check with the American Kennel Club (AKC). Many national clubs will have listings of breeders in different areas. You can also check for breeders online, and as long as the breeder is a member in good standing with a breeders club somewhere, and you can check out that membership, all should be well.

Attend dog shows. Many breeders show their animals, and this is an excellent way to not only find breeders, but more specifically to find breeders that will have show quality Chihuahuas, if this is what you are interested in.

Ask other Chihuahua owners for their breeders contact information. Many breeders don’t advertise much, and get all of their business through referrals. However, for those breeders that do advertise, keep an eye on your local classifieds.

You can find Chihuahuas in pet stores, but purchasing a Chihuahua – or any other animal – from a pet store usually is not recommended. When you purchase a Chihuahua through this channel, you really have no true idea as to the origins of the puppy, and because the dog has been exposed to so many other animals and people, his health must always be questioned. Your best bet, for a great Chihuahua is to purchase from a private breeder.

The important thing is not to be in a hurry. If you are in a hurry, you may not end up with the Chihuahua that is right for you, and you may even end up with an unhealthy Chihuahua. Take your time and find a responsible breeder. Even if they do not currently have a litter, it is just a matter of time until they do.
