Selecting a Chihuahua

Selecting a Chihuahua puppy is very exciting. These little pups are so tiny and cute; it’s hard to resist bringing the whole litter home. When confronted with all of this cuteness, how can you select just one puppy?

First, most Chihuahua puppies are not chosen for their looks, as much as they are chosen for their personalities. Not all personalities will jive well with your own personality, and it is important to find a Chihuahua that shares certain personality traits with you. A good breeder will ask you personal questions about your life, in an effort to match you with the right dog in his or her litter.

It is vital that you listen to the advice of your breeder in this matter! The breeder knows these puppies better than anyone else, and has already seen the personalities of each dog in the litter. Listen to what the breeder tells you about the personality of each puppy.

You must also take the health of the puppies into consideration. Be on the lookout for discharge from the eyes and nose. Look for clean ears, white teeth, and pink gums. Watch for coughing, sneezing, and vomiting, or signs of vomiting. Diarrhea is also an indication of ill health. The pups coat should be soft and clean. Look down past the coat to ensure that the skin appears to be healthy. Pot bellied dogs are really kind of cute, but this is a sign that worms exist. Also be on the lookout for fleas and ticks.

Determine whether you want a male or a female Chihuahua. Some people believe that the males are more aggressive than the females, or that males mark their territory and females do not. This is not true with the Chihuahua breed. Both males and females can be aggressive, and both sexes will mark their territory.

Make it a point to spend an hour or two choosing your Chihuahua puppy – and spend even more time with the entire litter if you are able to. You need this time to really get a sense of the personality traits of the puppies, and to let the puppy that you are meant to have chooses you. Believe it or not, dogs choose their owners more often than the owner chooses the dog, and these make the best canine/human relationships.

Finally, make sure that the Chihuahua pup is at least eight weeks old before you bring him home with you. The breeder should offer a 48 health guarantee, and you should visit a veterinarian within this 48 hour time frame to ensure that your puppy is as healthy as possible.
