Next, get a mentor. Often, if your breeder participates in dog shows, he or she will be happy to mentor you. Listen to the advice that they give you. Take notes. Attend shows with them – again as a spectator instead of a as participant. Take this opportunity to learn as much about showing dogs as you possibly can.

Find out when the dog shows are, and where they are located. This information can be obtained through the American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC sanctions dog shows and these are the shows that you want to participate in. You can get entry information for those shows through the AKC website.

Obtain an entry form and pay special attention to the deadline for entries, as well as the entry fees that are required. Make sure that you meet all of the requirements, and that the form is filled out correctly. Get as much information as you possibly can about the show and what is expected of you. If you are unsure, call the host of the show for more information. In most cases, the information that you need will accompany entry form for the show.

The night before the show, bath your dog and get a good night’s sleep. The day of the show, arrive at the show arena early. These shows are usually quite crowded with a great deal of activity going on throughout the day. This is liable to make you and your dog quite nervous, so the earlier you can arrive, the better off you and your Chihuahua will be.
