Will Your Chihuahua Have a Bad Temper
Many people mistakenly think that Chihuahuas have bad tempers. This really isn’t the case, although it may appear to be. For the most part, Chihuahuas are viciously loyal and protective, and of course they will always attempt to defend their territory.
But for the most part, Chihuahuas are sweet, loving little dogs. With that said, however, it is easy to understand why people may think of the Chihuahua as a bad tempered dog. It is a given that they are a suspicious breed. In fact, it is agreed that they are suspicious of everyone except their owner, but if you consider their small size, you might understand why this is a necessity for them.
When a Chihuahua is provoked, he will have a bad temper. Again, he is quite small, but he has a brave heart, and when you have so much bravery, in such a small body, one must come across as having a bad temper in the hopes of scaring other animals or people that may be threatening away.
Chihuahuas tend to dislike other animals – with the exception of other Chihuahuas. If other animals are present, you may get to see the dog’s bad temper up close and personal. If there are small children in the house, this may also bring out the dogs bad temper.
Chihuahuas require a great deal of love and affection from their owners. If they do not get the love, affection, and attention that they require, they may display their bad temper more often than you like. Make it a point to spend a great deal of quality time with your Chihuahua daily.
Proper training can also negate the bad temper of the Chihuahua. Naturally, you can’t train him to not get into a bad mood, but you can train him not to act on his bad mood. Depending on your particular Chihuahua, this may require professional training. Even with proper training, it’s really just a question of helping your Chihuahua to avoid situations that bring out the worst in him, so that you can always enjoy the best that he has to offer.
Unfortunately, the ‘bad temper’ reputation of the Chihuahua often over shadows his good qualities. These little dogs are highly intelligent, fiercely loyal, and extremely affectionate. They make excellent companions for the right person, and as long as they are not put into situations where they feel threatened – or situations where they feel that their owner is threatened, you most likely won’t encounter the famous temper of the Chihuahua.
