A Pekingese will grieve
A pekingese is such a loving creature it gives everything it has to a relationship. Pekingese have been reported to stop eating and loose interest in certain activities simply because it had to be left with a friend for a long period.
Imaging what you yourself would feel like if something suddenly were to happen to your loved one. You do not understand why or how this could happen to you.
A pekingese however does much the same thing, the only difference is it does not and cannot understand why and how. It only clings to the face that the loved one will return and things will return to normal. After a period of this waiting the pekingese will give up hope. Therefore a pekingese will grieve.
The one person it has depended upon for its very food, water, interaction, the one thing it had in its life is now gone. A pekingese does not understand life and death, or the fact that people can no longer care for them.
Perhaps their loved one had to go to a residential home. This cause much stress for the Pekingese. The daily routine has changed and its life has turned into chaos.
The pekingese will need a time of grieving however it is not a good ideal to let this continue. If it is at all possible try to find a person that in many way resembles the person that the Pekingese has lost.
They need to have the same actions, and characteristics of the person as well. Explain the situation to the person and see if they will be willing to help the pekingese. By taking it into their home and caring for it. This should be on a trial basis to see if it will truly work for the pekingese and the new owner. This usually works, however if it does not please seek the advice of a veterinarian immediately.
Another possible solution is a close family member the pekingese has shown interest in, at some point in its life with the lost loved one. Many time this work much better as the pekingese has seen and been around the family member in the past. Familiar faces are a reassurance to the pekingese that all hope may not be lost.
Someone that may can try and follow the schedule of the person the pekingese lost. This should help to ease some of the stress the Pekingese has, and give it a chance to have a new relations ship. This is better that the process of a Pekingese grieving itself to death.
Pekingese will show some of the same signs as humans while grieving.
They will loose their appetite; food has no taste or purpose. Toys have lost their attraction, ad humor. They will lie around and their eyes will weep.
A little of this is OK as the pekingese will need time to realize the loved one is not going to return. However please do not let this go on for weeks on end the Pekingese will surely not recover.
