Pekingese Mothers
Pekingese Mothers
A Pekingese mother is a special creature; she is about to bring life into the world that is just the same as she is. The mother will carry her babies to full term from the point of conception to the delivery for thirty-three to thirty-six days. A mother Pekingese can have as many as seven puppies. This is a rare case generally a female Pekingese only has three puppies.
As this event is taking place it is difficult for the mother she needs to rest in between contractions, to conserve her energy for the delivery.
Things should be as quiet as possible in your home while this even is taking place. Labor can take as long as eight-teen to twenty hours.
When the labor turns into delivery the mother will turn all of her attention to the new puppy. She will clean up and dispose of all the fetus matter, and afterbirth. This is gross however it is important to the mother. This is not really known why, except it has been explained that the dogs in the wild do this to keep predatory animals from discovering the birth and the newborn babies.
Once the puppy has been delivered the mother will continue to lick the puppy until it is crying and it is dry. She will then let the puppy move around a little to ensure it is strong and breathing on its own. Then she will place the puppy where it can nurse on her. It is important to make sure the puppy is nursing on the mother.
She may need help with this if this is her first litter. She will repeat these things until all of the puppies have been delivered. Then and only then will she rest as she lets her puppies nurse on her? After she has rested and her littler is sleeping she will venture out of the box, to eat and drink. She may stay outside of the box however she will stay just outside to guard her litter from other animals.
She will also be able to hear them should they need her. The mother will feed, clean, and guard her litter for six to eight weeks. After this the owner should step in and begin to care for the litter of puppies. As the puppies begin to eat mush the mother will stop producing as much milk, and eventually stop.
If the mother is let to dry up on her own without weaning the puppies off the mother's breasts will become engorged. This is very painful for the mother and should not happen. This can also cause a breast infection; witch would require a vet visit, and medication for the mother.
The mother then needs time to rebuild her body and rest her body. Therefore she should not be let to breed again the rest of the year or maybe even the next year. This will ensure that your Pekingese mothers and babies will always be healthy.
