Causes of Disease in Your Neon Tetra

Carbon dioxide poisoning has symptoms of increased or rapid respiration, and listlessness. You may notice that your fish will hang near the top of the water in the tank. This is caused by a lack of oxygen; there is simply too much carbon dioxide in the water. The treatment is to add more aeration in order to improve the gas exchange rate at the water surface. You also need to cut down on your plant fertilization. You need to check and also correct any poor water conditions and you need to carry out frequent water changes.
Poor water quality is another cause of disease that is completely preventable. The first sign of poor water quality is that your fish will be gasping for air near the water surface of the tank. It will also be less active. Overall bad health and poor color are a few more symptoms of poor water quality. The cause of poor water quality is usually in frequent water changes, poor filtrate should system, and the overuse of chemicals. In order to correct poor water quality, you need to make daily water changes until the ammonia, nitrate, and nitrate levels returned to their proper readings. You need to make sure that your aquarium has enough air ratio and add an additional air stone if necessary. Make sure that the pH of the water is within the proper range.
Metal poisoning is another cause of disease that is completely preventable. For symptoms you will notice erratic behavior and pale color. Because is having metal objects coming in contact with the aquarium water. The proper treatment is a complete water change. In order to avoid poisoning your tropical fish by accident, never allow any metal to touch the aquarium water. Two of the most common sources of poisoning are metal hoods and metal clips. To be safe you should use plastic clips and make sure that the glass cover fits properly so that no water will come into direct contact with the hood or the light fixture.
Chemical poisoning is another cause. The symptoms for this include erratic behavior, gasping for air, having your fish lie on their sides, refusal to eat, and a pale color. There are many different sources of chemical poisoning in the water. The most common cause would be cleaning supplies or insect control products. Never use insecticides, hairspray or cleaners near your aquarium. Small drops of these products can easily fall through the holes in the top of your tank cover and poison your fish. If you simply must use one of these products near your aquarium, make sure that you cover your tank ahead of time with plastic sheets or something else to prevent an accidental poisoning.
