The first thing that you can do to make sure that your pets have the best living conditions is to make sure that all the mechanical equipment is properly functioning each and every way. It is important that you observe your fish on a daily basis. It is very easy to watch your fish while you are feeding them. This will give you the opportunity to observe them at least twice a day. It will help you to become familiar with their feeding habits, activity levels, and appearance. By observing your fish daily, you will be able to notice right away if something is wrong. Quick diagnosis is the key to making sure you keep diseases from getting out of hand and spreading through your entire tank.
Mouth fungus has very distinctive symptoms. You will notice white, cotton like growths around the area of the mouth. Your fish will look similar to Santa Claus. You may also notice patches light skin in the same area. In the advanced stages, you will notice that the jawbone will begin to deteriorate badly.
Make sure that you remove the infected fish immediately in order to prevent the spread of this infection. You will need to place the fish into your quarantine tank. This is done to protect the other fish and to also make sure that you can treat your sick fish quickly and effectively. You can treat this disease with a commercial preparation such as methylene blue in the early stages. If this is not effective, then you need to consult your veterinarian immediately.
