The best way that you can ensure that your pets enjoy good health is to make sure that you do everything you can to prevent disease in your pets.

The first thing that you can do to make sure that your pets have the best living conditions possible is to make sure that all the mechanical equipment is properly functioning each and every way. Check the filter systems and make sure that they are running smoothly. Check to make sure that there is a proper water flow. If you notice anything unusual, make sure that you take care of it right away. Improper water flow can cause the chemical balance in the water to be disturbed.

Make sure that you monitor the water temperature. A fluctuation in the water temperature of more than a few degrees can lead to serious health problems. If something is wrong with the temperature in your tank, make sure that you check the water heater.

Make sure that you are cleaning the tank on a regular basis. You need to make sure that you are doing at least a partial cleaning every week. A weekly vacuuming of the gravel in the bottom of the aquarium is usually enough to help keep the water clear. If necessary, make sure that you use an algae scraper in order to clean the site of the tank as well.

It is very important that you observe your fish daily. An ideal time to observe your fish would be when you feed them. Since you will be feeding your fish at least twice a day, this gives you numerous opportunities to see how your fish interact with each other and how they behave. This is also the ideal time to observe their eating habits and their appearance.
There are numerous symptoms for slimy skin disease. You will notice a gray colored slime on the body or fins. You will also notice scratching and frayed fins. You may also notice an excessive mucous coat. The cause for this disease is one of numerous species of parasites.
It is very important that you immediately isolate any fish that is showing the symptoms of slimy skin disease. This disease is highly contagious and can spread throughout your tank very quickly. Place any fish that is infected with this disease into your quarantine tank. You can treat this disease with a remedy of malachite green and frequent water changes. You can also try short term formalin and salt baths. You need to correct any poor water conditions in order to help fight this infection.
Remember that poor water conditions are often the cause of numerous skin conditions. By checking the water on a daily basis, you can avoid many problems with your fish.
