Neon Tetras and Homeschooling
The South American Neon Tetra is a very popular fish and is very recognizable when it is in an aquarium. Neon Tetras are peaceful fish. They have a blue-green stripe that glitters on the side of its body, and also a beautiful red half stripe that is on the body below that. The neon is an omnivore, and it swims at around mid level in the tank. It also needs to be kept in schools. The recommended number is 6 to 8 at a minimum. Neons grow up to about an inch and a half in captivity and they can live as long as 10 years.
Because these fish are so popular and so easy to take care of, they make an excellent choice when it comes to having in addition to your homeschool curriculum.
You can use the study of your fish in a number of different ways.
For language arts, you can have the children write about different aspects of the fish. You can have them describe behavior, observations, etc. You can use the study of your Neon Tetra to help encourage vocabulary and other research.
For social studies, you can study about the Neon Tetra’s natural habitat. South America is a fascinating continent and you can use the study of the Neon Tetra's native home as a springboard to all sorts of discussions. You can also use the fact that Neons travel in schools to study group dynamics both with the fish and also as it relates to humans.
For math, you can use many different activities. You can calculate the amount of food you need to buy, how much equipment costs, and how much it costs for maintenance and upkeep of the equipment.
For science the possibilities are endless. You can study all types of aspects of the life of the fish. You can study sleeping patterns, eating habits, growth patterns, and many other behaviors. You can even use the opportunity to study any illness that might occur in your pets. Another idea for science experiments is to see how the fish react to feed them twice a day as opposed to feeding them more often but with smaller meals. Check to see if there is any difference in their reaction to you if you approach the tank to feed them more often.
No matter how you use your Neon Tetra is as part of a homeschool curriculum, you need to make sure that you document everything that you study and any experiments that you might have use. Be sure to only use experiments, of course, that will not hurt the fish.
Because of the longevity of the Neon Tetra, it is also exciting to see how your fish progress throughout the school year. Be sure to keep a journal to record your observations and any thoughts you might have.
