One of the most important things that you can do is to make the right choice for a substrate. There are many different commercially produced substrates that are available. You can find them at pet stores and also in other retail stores.
Avoid any substrate that does not have smooth surfaces. Jagged surfaces can be very dangerous for your fish.
Never use marbles as a substrate material. They are not suitable for a fish’s natural environment. Marbles are very large and they allow debris to become trapped. This can eventually lead to the water becoming fouled and to lead to poor water quality. Poor water quality will lead to diseased fish.
Another type of substrate that you should avoid is gravel that is brightly colored or neon colored. These types of gravel will detract from the natural beauty of your fish and they should be avoided. The neon gravel will make your fish book like they are washed out. Neon gravel also reflects a lot of white into the water. This can annoy your fish and will make them look very washed out.
You should also avoid using sand in the bottom of your tank. Not only is it difficult to keep clean, but it will also clog up your filters very quickly.
