Choosing Hay for Your Degu
Hay is an essential part of your Degus life. Not only will he eat hay, but he will also use it in his nest building activities. Fresh hay should always be available for your Degus. So, what type of hay should you get, where should you get it, how much is it going to cost you, and how exactly do you make it available for your Degus?
First, the best type of hay for Degus is called Timothy Hay. This is high quality hay that provides your Degus with the fiber that they need. Timothy Hay can be purchased from numerous sources, including your local pet store, in most cases. If you can't find it locally, you can order it online from Pet Smart.
Timothy Hay is reasonably priced. Twenty ounces of hay costs about four dollars. At Pet Smart, you can buy a 96 ounce bag for about fifteen dollars. Buy in bulk if you can, because you will go through a great deal of hay for your Degus. At the pet store, the hay will be sold in bags, as opposed to blocks or bales, like what you would expect for feeding livestock. So, if you are picturing a big bale of hay sitting in your driveway, you can relax.
Making the hay available for your Degus isn't very hard at all. You can buy a hayrack for your cage, and these are sold at most pet stores, or through online sources. If you cannot find a hayrack, or you cannot attach a hayrack to the interior of your cage – which is usually the case if you have a cage with glass walls – you can put the hay in a food dish.
The majority of the hay should be in a food dish or in a hayrack. However, you can also scatter little bits of hay with the bedding. Your Degus will enjoy foraging for it.
Just because you purchase your hay from a reputable pet store, and it is bagged up nice and neat, this is not an indication that the hay is good. Lots of things can go wrong with hay, and it is important that you inspect it before you give it to your Degus.
First, the hay should be a light brown, and not green. It should smell fresh, and have a slightly sweet odor to it. If it smells musty, take it back to the store or throw it away. If there are areas of pink or white coloring in the hay, take it back to the store or throw it away. All of these conditions are signs of mold, which can kill your Degu, or at the very least, make him very ill.
Again, hay is important to your Degu, and it is up to you to provide it. Unlike food, hay should be made available to your Degus at all times. Furthermore, you should take a look at the hay in the hayrack or food bowl each day to ensure that it is still healthy.
