Choosing a Veterinarian for Your Degu
Although Degus are relatively healthy pets, this doesn't mean that there won't come a point in time when you need the services of a veterinarian. As with any other pet, it is wise to have a veterinarian lined up before illness or an injury occur. Also note that not just any veterinarian will make a suitable veterinarian for your Degu.
Start by asking someone that you trust for a recommendation. If you get your Degu from a breeder, he or she should be able to recommend a good veterinarian. Otherwise, try to get in touch with other Degu owners to find out which veterinarian they use. You need a veterinarian who is used to caring for Degus - specifically.
Furthermore, you need to know what types of services your veterinarian offers. What type of testing equipment does he have? Does he offer emergency care? Does he keep office hours that work for your schedule?
Make an appointment with the veterinarians that you want to check out. You should meet the veterinarian and his staff. Look around the office. Is it clean and orderly? Is there literature available? Is the staff answering your questions, or are they acting like you are a bother to them? Will they give you a tour of the facility?
What organizations does the veterinarian belong to? Is he affiliates with the local human society? Can he provide you with necessary referrals? Check out every veterinarian that you consider with your states licensing board. Here, you will be able to see if any complaints have been filed against the veterinarian in question.
Your veterinarian needs more than a good education concerning the care of animals. He also needs to actually care about the animals. Believe it or not, some veterinarians are in it for the money, and could care less about the animals. Try to get a true sense of where your veterinarian stands on this issue.
Be sure to ask lots of questions, and try to ask some questions that you already know the answer to…just to make sure that the veterinarian really does know what he is talking about when it comes to caring for Degus. Ask what types of procedures he has performed on other Degus, and what the results were.
Finally, try to use a veterinarian clinic that allows you to see the same veterinarian each time you visit. Seeing multiple doctors can be confusing for you, and upsetting to your pet Degu. It may take a bit of leg work and a lot of questions, but you will find the right veterinarian to care for your Degu – before he actually needs the services of a veterinarian.
