Communicating with Other Degu Owners

When you own a Degu, or consider getting a Degu, you will want to find as much information as you can about these amazing little creatures. Unfortunately, you won't have a great deal of luck. Surprisingly, there is little literature about Degus in existence, and what there is mostly relates to Degus in the wild. The best way to get Degu information is through communication with other Degu owners.

Unfortunately, there is no national organization that deals with Degus. This makes it a bit harder to find Degus, but not impossible. Today, the Internet has made communication easier than every before, and you can find online communities that are dedicated to Degus.

Along with forums, you will also find numerous email lists for Degu owners. These can be very active lists, so you may not want to join them all. Join the ones that have the level of activity that you prefer. Otherwise, you will find your inbox flooded with email each day!

You can also attract other Degu owners to you by starting a website dedicated to the care of Degus. It doesn't have to be technical, and it could be nothing more than pictures of your own Degus with captions, and a way to contact you.

You may be able to find other Degu owners through local breeders. This gives you the opportunity to connect with Degu owners on the local level, and you may even get in touch with a group of people who are interested in starting a Degu club for your area, or better yet, interested in getting a national organization off of the ground.

Check with your veterinarian. Give him your contact details, and ask him to share those details with other Degu owners. He will not give you their details without their permission. If you bring your Degu to the veterinarian, it only stands to reason that other Degu owners in the area will also bring their pets to the vet.

If you don't have any luck finding other Degu owners, consider putting a small ad in your local newspaper. Provide your email address or phone number, and ask other Degu owners to contact you for the purpose of sharing ideas, tips, and information.

Once you open up the lines of communication with other Degu owners, it is important to keep those lines open. Real friendships can be formed, even if those relationships started with a need for simple information concerning Degus. You already have something in common with these people, and that is what relationships are based on.

Communicating with other Degu owners is more important than you may realize. It is inevitable that you are going to run into a situation with your Degus that can only be explained – or understood - by other Degu owners.
