Does Your Degu Need Grooming
Degus make interesting and wonderful pets. These are considered to be ‘low maintenance' animals, and one of the reasons why people will choose Degus over other types of rodent pets is because Degus don't require much in the way of grooming, and they do not emit ‘scents,' which humans would consider ‘odors.'
So, in answer to the question, your Degu actually does not require grooming from you. What he does require, however, are the tools to groom him self. You see, Degus do not bath in water. Instead, they bath in dust, commonly called dust baths.
This special dust is designed to remove dirt and debris from the Degus fur, while also removing excess oils that can actually cause skin problems for him. Most Degu owners use commercial dust designed for chinchillas for the dust bath. The dust is placed one to two inches deep, in any type of dish that is big enough to hold all of the Degus, and allow them room to roll around in the dust.
If for some reason you feel your Degu needs an actual water bath, he can certainly have one. In most cases, unless your Degu has gotten into something that would require bathing, he won't need a water bath. If you must bath him, however, use warm water, and tear free baby shampoo. Avoid washing his face, make sure that you rinse him well, dry him, and allow him to roll in the sand bath before joining his cage mates…or the other Degus may reject him because he doesn't ‘smell right.'
The only other grooming endeavors that your Degu may require from you is nail trimming. Most of the time, this isn't necessary, because your Degu will actually chew his nails, or keep them worn down through clawing hard surfaces in his cage. If nail trimming is required, however, this can easily be done with small nail scissors designed for pets. You can also take him to a groomer or a veterinarian and have his nails trimmed for a very small price. If you are unsure about doing this, ask a groomer or veterinarian to show you how it is done.
Other than this, Degus groom themselves and each other. They may even try to groom you, and if they do, you should be proud. Grooming is a sign of affection in the world of Degus. You may see the Degus nibbling at each other, and in most cases, this is actually grooming.
The only other ‘grooming' that is needed from you is for you to keep their cage clean. Weekly cleaning is important. Otherwise, you will have to deal with Degu odor that is caused by urination and feces. All bedding should be removed and replaced, and some items in the cage will need to be washed and thoroughly rinsed, such as food dishes and water bottles, as well as some toys.
