How Many Degus Do You Need
So, you want a Degu as a pet. Are you prepared to handle two? If not, you need to consider a different pet. You see, Degus are very social animals, and while they can become accustomed to human socialization, they really need socialization with other Degus for their health, well-being, and overall happiness.
Very seldom will you come across a Degu owner that has just one Degu. In most cases, they always have at least two, and usually have even more, with the average being between four and six Degus. Anyone who truly cares for these unique little animals would never consider just having one Degu.
In the wild, Degus live in large communities, and those communities consist of different cults – or families. A family consists of one male, and two to four females. Those family members work together, graze together, play together, fight together, live together, and sleep together. They communicate quite well with each other, and with the rest of the community.
Degus have their own hierarchy, and this is true whether the Degu lives in the wild or in a cage with other Degus. In the world of Degus, the Degu who has the highest pile of sticks around his mound is the dominant Degu. All other Degus show him respect and defer to him. This same contest for dominance will also take place in a cage, and you will know which Degu is the dominant one by the pile that he has…or by the fact that the dominant Degu is awarded the highest perch or shelf in the cage, where he takes up residence.
Sometimes, you will come across two Degus that simply cannot stand each other. The sex doesn't even seem to matter in this case. Male Degus seldom get along with each other, but females can get along well with either males or females. Furthermore, neutered males do not change their opinion of each other. In most cases, you will only want one male in your cage, and if you don't want babies, he needs to be neutered.
As you can see, it really isn't a question of how many Degus you need. It is more of a question of how many Degus your original Degu needs. Lone Degus often do not fare well. They are not as active as they should be. They have nobody to communicate with, and nobody to play with. They have no family, and no friends – no matter how much you may love them. Think, for just a moment, how that may make you feel.
Besides, when you see a family of Degus in action, you will get hours and hours of entertainment seeing how they relate to one another, how they care for one another, and how they live life in general – as a group.
