How to Find a Pet Degu

You've done your research, and you are sure that you want a pet Degu. You know what all is required in terms of housing, feeding, and care, and you are prepared for the expense of owning a Degu, in both time and money. The only question you have left is where you should find your new pet Degu.

Many pet stores do not carry Degus. Those that do often do not care for them properly. Many pet store employees don't even know what a Degu is. As a responsible future pet owner, you should always avoid buying your Degu from a pet store, where the Degus may be purchased from less than responsible breeders.

Instead, you should seek out two other options. The first option is to find a private Degu breeder…one that doesn't breed for the purpose of selling to pet stores. The second option is to adopt a Degu from a rescue center.

With other small pets, there are actual national organizations. You can usually go through those organizations to find responsible breeders near you. Unfortunately, this isn't the case for Degus. You can, however, find breeders by doing a search on the Internet. When purchasing from a breeder, you can expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $60. Degus purchased in pet stores cost about $20, but are not nearly as healthy as the ones purchased from responsible breeders.

The second option, again, is to adopt a Degu from a rescue center. You should call your local humane society to see if they are aware of any Degus that are up for adoption in your area. You should also check out online sources for people who are looking for homes for their Degus. You can also look in your local newspapers classified section, but you probably won't find many – or any – listings for Degus. However, if there is a breeder in your area, they may advertise in the paper.

If you cannot find a breeder, and you cannot find a Degu that is up for adoption, your only other option is to purchase one from a pet store. Use caution. Understand that you must educate yourself in advance, because in most cases, the employees at the pet store won't have a clue. Inspect the Degus. Look at their environment. Is it kept clean? Are the Degus happy with each other? Is their skin healthy? Are there any signs of poor health or defects? Does the pet store have a guarantee?

Finding a Degu isn't necessarily easy, and in most cases, you need two Degus…not just one. If you really want a pet Degu, however, you will search until you find the right Degu – or pair of Degus – for you.
