Common Gerbil Illnesses
Most gerbils in the pet shops are bred in the state of Mongolia. A French scientist discovered them in the early years of the 1950s. During 1954 they had already flooded laboratories in the USA. They were great pets because they were strangely soft and gentle. These days, you will find all kinds of gerbils in pet stores, from various places over the world, just not Mongolia. The gerbils are energetic animals with a strong constitution. However, they are also prone to illnesses.
Gerbils, by the virtue of their constitution, are strong and fit animals who don’t suffer a day from any ailment. But sometimes they can get certain diseases. If the illness can be placed early, the vet can treat the gerbils very well. Usually the animals are much healthier than various other rodents and most never need any treatment. You will notice if something goes wrong, especially if you are very close to your pets.
Overgrown Teeth Take care of your gerbil’s front teeth.
The canines and incisors continue growing all throughout life. Free gerbils chew wild foliage to shave their teeth. So as a pet, gerbils constantly require things to chew on. Give them toys and sticks. If you don’t malocclusion or misalignment of teeth happens and that is very painful. The teeth curl into the gums and it is a painful thing. In such cases the vet will shave their teeth. Keep a check on the teeth of your pet.
Diarrhea
This is a very serious disease for the gerbil. Dehydration ultimately leads to death. See the gerbil’s anal area for wetness and paste. Diarrhea results from dietary problems or a fatal gerbil disease-Tyzzer. In such cases, immediate attention from the vet is needed.
Respiratory Infection
Keep the cage of your gerbil clean with low humid conditions. This is because gerbils catch respiratory diseases easily. The symptoms comprise runny nose and eyes, sneezing and coughing. It can get fatal so contact the vet immediately.
Examine your gerbil’s tail:
if your gerbil gets a tail half of its normal size, it could be an unpleasant shock. The tail has a prominent black tip and is made in a way that it falls off when trapped by an attacker. Similarly, the tail might get chopped off if you pick your pet by the tail or the tail is caught under something heavy. A lot of bloodshed occurs and the tailbone gets naked. It is an unpleasant sight. But fortunately, most of the tails heal without any medicinal check. The bone erodes away and the gerbil has half the tail left. It may not be a pretty sight but the gerbil can move around easily and carry on as it did previously in the normal course of life.
Gerbils show prominent symptoms only a very late stage of their illness. So contact the vet as soon a something abnormal strikes you. With proper assistance, your gerbil will be able to survive more successfully and come back to proper ordinary life as before.
