How to clean up a Gerbil's cage
How to clean up a Gerbil’s Cage?
Home is a place which we always keep clean. An untidy home not only results to sickness, but the level of comfort also reduces in an unclean place. Thus, along with the gerbil… its really required to clean up its cage also.
The Entire cleaning process:
Starting:
We should always take safety measures before cleaning a gerbils cage as the dirt can create infectious diseases. Thus we should wear an apron, a pair of gloves and a mask before starting the entire cleaning process.
We should take the gerbil out of the cage and put it in a different place at a distance. Exposure to cleaning materials can cause illness to the gerbil.
We have to choose a place which is nearby a dustbin to throw the dirt and trash. We should have an access to running water for the cleaning of the cage.
We should gather all the antibacterial cleaning supplies---we have to take those cleaning supplies only which are safe for animals.
We have to arrange for new bedding, which should be more or less similar to the old bedding. The gerbil may feel uncomfortable in using a completely new kind of bedding.
The Basic Process:
First, we have to take out the bowls and bottles from the cage. We have it empty the food in the trash bin.
(Remember to throw the food materials in a disinfected paper bag if the gerbil is sick)
Next, We should replace these bowls and bottles with new ones. Or we should soak these bottles into a big bowl of hot water and add a certain amount of anti-bacterial cleaning product into the water.
Then, We should take out all the toys and other accessories from the cage. These should be immersed in that anti-bacterial hot water and rinsed properly
.
Also, We should throw away or burn the old bedding. Don’t forget to keep a small portion of the old bedding.
Furthermore, We should use the anti-bacterial cleaning product, hot water and a brush to clean the inner and outer portions of the cage.
We should be sure that we rinse the entire cage properly. Though we are using an anti bacterial product which is not quite harmful to animals, Still we should take precautions and shouldn’t directly expose your gerbil to that product---That’s why rinsing is required. After all we all love our gerbils and we would like to take proper precautions against any infectious disease that’s harmful for them.
After drying the cage, bowls, bottles and toys, we should clean them with a dry cloth. We should arrange for the bedding. Put the small portion of the old bedding into the new bedding. (This would make the gerbil more comfortable)
Finally, we have to replace the food and the water. And at last we can keep our gerbil back to its cage.
Points to remember:
Unscented white paper napkins, towels and cloth can be used to create bedding for the gerbils.
We should use cleaning products that are safe for the animals.
We should wear a mask, gloves and apron---as exposure to a pregnant or sick gerbil’s waste is not good for health.
We should never spray cleaning products directly in front of the gerbil.
When we put in a small portion of the old bedding into the new bedding we should be sure that the old beddings portion is not infectious or wet. Wet bedding shouldn’t be mixed with the new bedding.
We should throw away or burn the old bedding. That can be infectious for us.
We shouldn’t fluffy cotton wools as our bedding material. Its harmful for the gerbil if it eats the cotton.
We shouldn’t use straw as bedding as the sharp edges can create problems for the gerbil. Straw beds can also be uncomfortable for the animal.
