Nutrition tips for a GERBIL
Nutrition tips for a GERBIL:
One has to be very careful in looking after a gerbil’s nutrition To keep your gerbil healthy and happy you have to maintain a basic diet chart for it.
A basic gerbil diet should consist of:
A pellet or Block feed, made especially to fulfill the dietary requirements of a gerbil.
This type of food is better than a seed mix. As the mischievous gerbils consume their favorites and leave the rest in a seed mix, they don’t get enough nutrition. But that kind of problem is not faced in Block feed.—any kind of pet store has a ready supply of this kind of food.
Fresh vegetables, plain cereals, seeds, small pieces of fruits etc can be used as supplements to their basic feed. But these foods should be given to the gerbils occasionally.
To make their diet interesting you may use these supplements—else the entire diet would become very stereotypical and monotonous. Within a few days you would come to know about the gerbils liking, feed it accordingly.
Water is very important in a gerbil diet. The water should be served in a bowl or in a water bottle consisting of a metal straw (The gerbils often chew up the plastic straws, so don’t use them.) Make sure that the gerbils consume clean and fresh water, else they can be affected with various diseases.
You should provide your gerbil with wooden planks or hardwood blocks to gnaw on. Occasionally you should also provide them with dog biscuits. The gerbils have incisors which grow continuously. These teeth should be worn down. Or else these can grow and eventually poke out of the gerbil’s cheek creating extreme poignancy for the gerbil.
e) In the wild, gerbils hunt and survive on insects---for example meal worms and live crickets. They get a lot of protein from these kind of food. Because of the running and hunting, metabolism occurs helping the gerbil to digest the food faster.
In case of a pet gerbil, food can be used in luring the gerbil and training it. You can put a savory item on your palm and ask the gerbil to come and eat it. This way you can train and teach the gerbil and become its friend.
Food that should be avoided:
Vegetables containing chemicals— Chemically treated potatoes, tomatoes, rhubarb shouldn’t be given to a gerbil. Even their leaves shouldn’t be given for consumption. Vegetables should be 100% organic.
More nutritional foods---- Some food are very special for the gerbil. But high consumption of favorite foods is also a strict no-no. For example a gerbil shouldn’t be given large amount of lettuce. As lettuce contains a lot of water in it—it may result into diarrhea, which can be very fatal for the animal.
Foods having high fat content—Sunflower seeds and peanuts contains high fat. A restricted amount. of these should be given to the gerbil.
If we love someone---we have great responsibilities towards them. This statement works even in case of your pets. We should be greatly concerned about our pets health and should provide it with properly balanced and healthy diet. This nutrition rules and regulations were not just for a gerbil…but for a friend, who would spent the entire life with you.
