Toys for your gerbil
Toys for your gerbil
Great pets they may be, but there are certain things you must keep in mind before investing in a gerbil as a pet. These are some invaluable tips intended to help you keep your gerbil happy and gay.
Give the gerbil plenty of cardboard to chew, since digging and chewing together constitute the favorite pastimes of a gerbil. You can give them some alternative material in the form of wood shavings or some softer kind of cellulose material to dig their teeth into and derive some mental and physical stimulation from it.
Gerbils have very little food hassles but its imperative that you keep a steady supply of nourishment always available to them. If left with surplus food, gerbils have a tendency to put on weight so give them just the amount that is necessary. Feed them with grain and seeds, supplemented with food in the form of pellets. To keep your gerbil in shape, feed it fatty sunflower seeds and peanuts on a sparse scale.
If you give them excess food, they will burrow it or hide it somewhere else and you won't be able to ascertain whether the gerbil is hungry or not. Gerbils enjoy fruits like apples, pears and vegetables like carrots and lettuce. Also remember to supply some untreated wood for them to chew on.
Always keep the water supply available to the gerbil. These restless fidgety animals tire themselves very easily and just supplying them with watery fruits is not enough. Don't allow them to get dehydrated, instead keep a drip water bottle running throughout the day.
Provide them with enough substrate like cardboard or tissue paper or untreated wood to enable them to remain engrossed in the act of chewing or digging, burrowing underground tunnels and living in them. Its very beneficial for them if you provide them with an opportunity for building an underground nest since it has been scientifically proved that gerbils who grew up in an underground nest had less repetitive behaviour.
As with any living creature, gerbils have a tendency to fall sick once they start ageing. Its essential that you keep a source of veterinary care handy, so that if anything happens to your pet, you can immediately seek medical counsel and mend things before they get out of hand. Maintain a habit of taking your gerbil to the vet once every two weeks.
Gerbils teeth grow continuously so its important that you arrange for excess untreated wood pieces to allow the gerbils to chew on and keep their teeth trimmed. Unless the gerbil's teeth is of proper shape and size, it might accidentally bite itself and bleed to death. Chewing on stray wood is also a favorite pastime of gerbils and it helps keep them occupied and happy. Lots of pet stores offer wood treats or cardboard pieces to give it to your gerbil to chew on.
Gerbils love to bathe in the sand since it helps keep its fur free from grease. Its essential that you always fill up the gerbils cage or aquarium with the premium quality Aragonite sand.
