What do you want to know about Gerbils

What do you want to know about Gerbils?

Have you ever thought of adopting a gerbil for a pet? Gerbils have become extremely popular among animal lovers, and many have chosen them to be their household pets. They are curious creatures, and are attracted to new smells and sounds. With their funny tricks on display, you could easily spend hours watching them without realizing it!  In fact, gerbils will hunt out the source of a new sound instead of looking for a place to hide.

These creatures converse by making high pitched squeaky sounds. Whenever they are scared or excited, you will find them making such sounds. Yet, because of the high pitch, most adult humans will not be able to hear them. Very young gerbils, however, can be heard. Sometimes, they use other modes of communication as well. They make effective use of their body language, enabling you to understand what it is trying to convey!

You will find when gerbils meet, they greet each other by licking their mouths. It almost seems like they are rubbing noses! Gerbils recognize other gerbils through the taste of their saliva- and hence they lick the other’s mouth.

Another favorite antic of the gerbil is what is known as ‘drumming’. This is one of their non verbal methods of communication. They will stand up erect and thump on the ground with their hind legs in order to warn other gerbils regarding some approaching danger. They could also resort to drumming when it is mating season, it is a method to attract attention from the opposite sex. Interestingly, drumming is an action that young gerbils learn through imitation of their parents’ behavior. Thus, they often start drumming without any reason!

Have you ever seen a gerbil in an excited state? It will start jumping up and down on all its four feet. Sometimes they playfully imitate boxing movements with their front paws. However, it can also lead to a fight. Gerbils start boxing with each other by hitting on the head and then they start wrestling seriously.

Being inquisitive by nature, you will often find gerbils sniffing around its cage. At times they sit upright without doing anything. Gerbils are usually happy and relaxed creatures. However, whenever you find one standing in a frozen stance with its palms joined- it must be frightened.
Whenever there are two gerbils in the same environment, they start playing with each other by offering their throats and rolling around. This seems to be an invitation to the other to start cleaning his friend. Most often this is a thorough and arduous cleaning process, and it reflects their relaxed state of mind. Grooming is an important part of their routine and they enjoy it a lot.

You won’t have much problem getting a gerbil to socialize. However, just like any other animal, sometimes it becomes annoyed and shows it by pushing others away with its head. If you disturb it in one of its moods, the gerbil will push away your hand as well!

In order to enjoy the company of a creature as friendly and funny as a gerbil, you must be able to understand its body language. It will communicate all its needs to you by such non verbal methods of communication. You simply need to keep your eyes and ears open in order to ensure its well being.
