Connecting With Other Hedgehog Owners
Once you become a hedgehog owner, you will want to learn more about these fascinating creatures. Your breeder and your veterinarian will both be fantastic sources of information, but some of the best information that you will ever receive will actually come from other hedgehog owners.
In order to connect with other hedgehog owners, start by joining the International Hedgehog Association, at http://hedgehogclub.com/. This organization not only holds seminars concerning the health and care of hedgehogs, but they also sponsor shows for hedgehogs.
Just by being a member you will connect with other hedgehog owners, however you should also attend as many shows in your area as possible as well, because this will definitely get you connected, face-to-face. You should also check to see if there are hedgehog clubs that are specific to your geographic location, and join those as well.
Your breeder may be able to put you in touch with other hedgehog owners. Unless another owner has specifically given the breeder permission to share their contact information, the breeder won’t be able to give you the information. However, you can leave your information with the breeder, and ask him or her to give it out to other owners.
Past this, the only other option for making connections with other hedgehog owners is the Internet. Fortunately, you can connect with hedgehog owners around the world on the Internet, at the speed of light. Make it a point to start visiting and participating in some of the better hedgehog specific forums online. These include Hedgehog World, at http://www.hedgehogworld.com/, Hedgehog Central, at http://www.hedgehogcentral.com/forum/, and The Hedgehog Welfare Society, at http://www.hedgehogwelfare.org/.
The Hedgehog Welfare Society does not actually maintain a forum. Instead, they maintain an email list, where members are able to communicate with each other via email, instead of a web based application. This is a very popular email list, and it does stay quite busy.
You may not realize it when you first get your hedgehog, but communication with other owners really is important to you and your hedgehog. There will come a point in time when something is going on with your hedgehog that you simply do not understand, and cannot figure out. The chances are very good that someone in the community or communities that you participate in has had the same experience, and can give you information that you and your hedgehog need.
By communicating with others and sharing information, we can only make the lives of our hedgehogs, and ourselves as hedgehog owners, better. Hedgehogs have not been kept as pets for a long period of time, and there is still a great deal to be learned about these amazing creatures. Make sure that you do your share of participating in these communities, in an effort to improve the care of hedgehogs everywhere.
