Showing Your Hedgehog
Believe it or not, each year, the International Hedgehog Association sanctions numerous shows for hedgehogs around the country. This has been the case since 1995, and although many people don’t realize it, these shows do indeed have an important purpose. It is through these shows that we, as hedgehog owners, are able to learn more about these amazing animals.
If you are interested in showing your hedgehog, you are advised to attend several hedgehog shows before you actually enter. This will allow you to see how the shows are conducted, and what is expected of you as a hedgehog owner. By attending shows before you actually enter, you can avoid making numerous mistakes that you would most likely make otherwise, as a newcomer to showing hedgehogs.
The first rule of showing hedgehogs is to ensure that any show that you enter is actually sanctioned by the IHA. Shows that are not sanctioned by the IHA are not sanctioned for a reason, and it is important to remember this. In most cases, the cause is that the show is not following the IHA Standard, that the judge or judges have not been properly instructed and are not licensed, and various other – good – reasons.
Next, you must obtain the forms to enter the show. These are generally supplied by the person or organization who is hosting the show. These forms must be filled out completely and accurately, and must be submitted before the deadline, along with any required entry fees. Double check all of the information you put on the form, and if you aren’t sure what is being asked, contact the host of the show and ask.
With that done, you are ready to prepare for the hedgehog show. There are a few things that you will need, including a show cage. Most hedgehog owners use pet taxis or kennels for this, as these types of cages provide the hedgehog with the most safety. Small cages are suitable to use as show cages, and each hedgehog needs his own cage.
Each cage should have your name and address written directly on it (don’t use tape), and you should also write the hedgehog’s name on the front of the cage as well. Cages must be clean, with clean bedding, and you should provide your hedgehog with food and water.
Naturally, you want your hedgehog to look his best, and in most cases, this means a good bath. Hopefully, this is something that you do on a regular basis even if you aren’t showing your hedgehog, however you will want to give him a good bath either the day before the show, or the day of the show. Make sure that you trim his nails as well. Furthermore, your hedgehog must be completely free of fleas, mites, or other parasites in order to be allowed in the show.
The day of the show, arrive as early as possible. Note that many shows will not allow owners in until a certain time. Make sure that you find out how early you may arrive when you register for the show. You won’t want to be rushed, and you will want time to talk to other hedgehog owner’s as well before the show actually starts.
