Why Hedgehogs Make Good Pets
When you first consider getting a pet, you may not actually consider a hedgehog. You may be considering a ferret or a guinea pig, but a hedgehog is also a good choice. In fact, for some people, a hedgehog makes the perfect pet.
First, there is the issue of pet dander. Dogs and cats have dander, and this makes them impossible pets for many people. However, hedgehogs have no pet dander, which makes them ‘hypo-allergenic’ pets, and even people who have severe allergies to other types of animals can have a hedgehog living in their home without a problem.
Then, there is the question of noise and space. Hedgehogs make very gentle, quiet noises that will not disturb you or your neighbors, and they do not require a great deal of space. This means that hedgehogs are ideal pets for apartment living, or for families who don’t have a great deal of space.
While hedgehogs do require a certain level of care, they are not considered high maintenance pets. This means that they are affordable pets for just about any budget. Once their housing is built or purchased, the only thing they require is food, and if you have them litter trained, litter materials.
Hedgehogs are strictly indoor pets. They do not require time outside to exercise, or walks to take care of their business. While walking a dog in the rain and the snow is a reality, this simply doesn’t exist when you own a hedgehog. You can stay indoors on those cold and rainy days.
One of the disadvantages of owning a hedgehog is that they don’t live as long as dogs and cats. The average life span of a hedgehog is between four and six years, and some live to be as old as seven. However, depending on how you look at it, this may be an advantage to you, as you will not be committing to the same amount of time, in years, with a hedgehog as you would with a dog or cat.
Hedgehogs, although pure bred animals, are actually quite affordable. While a cute little dog may cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to acquire a hedgehog costs between $150 and $200. Furthermore, unlike many exotic pets, hedgehogs are not aggressive animals. However, they do have quills. Fortunately, those quills are not as dangerous as they look, and are actually quite soft.
You should also note that hedgehogs are naturally nocturnal animals, meaning that they are most active at night. This means that while you are at work during the day, they will be peacefully sleeping, and not grieving for your time and attention.
Finally, hedgehogs make good pets because they are unusual. Lots of people own dogs or cats, and these days, even ferrets. But if you own a hedgehog, you will be the envy of your friends. They don’t shed. They don’t have pet dander. They don’t require walks, and they don’t have scent glands to stink up the place. Yes, hedgehogs absolutely make wonderful pets.
