Before you actually purchase or adopt a hedgehog, it is wise to line up a veterinarian for his care. Finding veterinarians that care for hedgehogs isn’t always easy, and it is very unwise to wait until an illness or injury occurs before selecting a veterinarian.

First note that not all veterinarians handle exotic animals, and even those who do deal with exotic animal care do not necessarily care for hedgehogs. It is important that when you are shopping for a veterinarian that you ask if the veterinarian has experience with hedgehogs, specifically. Furthermore, it is important to evaluate the staff as well, since the veterinarian won’t be the only one handling and caring for your beloved hedgehog.

The first step to finding a veterinarian is to ask your breeder which doctor he or she uses. A good breeder will instantly be able to give you a name and a number, and in most cases, your search will be over. However, if the breeder doesn’t live near you, you may need to search for a veterinarian closer to home. Call the breeders veterinarian and ask if they can recommend someone close to your location.

Failing this, get out your phone book, turn to the yellow pages, and start working your way down the list. If one veterinarian doesn’t deal with hedgehogs, ask him to recommend someone who does, in order to shorten your search. You may also want to call your local Humane Society for a recommendation. They often get exotic animals in their facilities, and therefore have need of veterinarians who handle exotics as well.

Next, make a visit to the veterinarian’s office. While you are waiting to see the veterinarian for a consultation, take a look around. Is the place clean? How does the staff interact with patients and owners? Do you feel comfortable with the staff?

Questions to ask the staff include: Are appointments needed? How hard is it to get an appointment? How many veterinarians are there at this facility? What are the fees for care? What types of diagnostic tests are performed at this facility? Questions to ask the veterinarian include: Do you have experience with hedgehogs? If so, how much experience do you have? What licenses and memberships do you hold? How do you handle emergency care?

Take the time you need to get an accurate portrayal of the veterinarian, his staff, and the facilities. Do not allow anyone to rush you, and if they are rushing you, you might be better off finding a different veterinarian. At the same time, don’t dawdle unnecessarily. Have your list of questions ready, and realize that other pet owners are waiting to see the veterinarian as well. Consider this as a good sign, but at the same time, make sure that your questions are answered to your satisfaction, and that the facility is up to par with what is needed for the care of of your hedgehog.

You should select your hedgehog’s veterinarian with as much care and concern as you would select a doctor for your own care. Your beloved hedgehogs life depends on it.
